The first time I heard about the boat trip from Lombok to Labuan Bajo was when I visited Satonda Island in 2010. I saw a boat passing by the island where we were and our guide told me about the boat trip. Since then, I kept dreaming of joining the trip. It seemed fun & adventurous! But for a long time, I had never gotten the chance since life took me elsewhere. So when we lived in Jakarta, I asked Kyle what if we could go to Komodo island, promising he could see the most beautiful beaches Indonesia has to offer. And finally I was able to join the boat trip from Lombok to Labuan Bajo! Despite living not very far from the sea we lived in Central Park, West Jakarta, we didn’t visit the beaches very often. I didn’t really enjoy Thousand Islands and often I was busy with my job, which sometimes required me to work on the weekend. But one time, I got 7 days off so we both decided to leave Jakarta immediately! A BOAT TRIP FROM LOMBOK TO LABUAN BAJO I did my research to find out how to do the boat trip from Lombok to Labuan Bajo. Though a Facebook group called Backpacker Indonesia, I found an operator called Wanua Adventures. The operator got a lot of positive reviews from the group members and they all seemed happy with Wanua. Soon after I found their page, I contacted them and booked a 4D3N boat trip from Lombok to Labuan Bajo. The price is per person for the boat trip with a cabin room. It’s slightly more expensive than the price for sleeping on the deck. Since we want to be able to sleep more comfortably I chose the cabin. Pak Yayat from Wanua Adventures gave me a discount so we paid for each of us. The price also included a pick-up service from Lombok International Airport to Labuhan Lombok harbor, meals 3x per day, and entrance fee to Komodo national park. THE BOAT The boat departs to Flores from Lombok every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. When we landed at Lombok International Airport on Saturday morning, Pak Yayat and friends were waiting for us at the airport. With a car, they took us to the harbor located on the eastern side of the island. It took around 1 hour to get to the harbor. But when we got to the harbor, we didn’t have to wait long to get on board since the boat was ready. My first impression of the boat was positive. It looked nice, clean, and well-maintained. Compared to the other companies’ boats I saw on the harbor, the Wanua Adventures boat was much larger, and seemed much more comfortable. There was plenty of room in the main deck/ eating area, and a nice spot at the front of the boat to enjoy some sun while sailing. The deck sleeping area is spacious and clean. Mattresses, pillows, and blankets were prepared for about 25 passengers. On the bottom floor I found our cabin. It was small but equipped with a mattress that was quite comfortable, along with a fan. There wasn’t much space to keep our stuff so we had to put our belongings on the bed as well. Beside our cabin, there was one more cabin. A French family stayed there. Before the boat trip from Lombok to Labuan Bajo started, I was feeling a little bit nervous due to a boat accident that had happened at Lake Toba, North Sumatra before because of overcapacity. But Wanua assured me that they were taking passenger safety seriously. Since there were 30 passengers at the time, Wanua decided to use 1 boat. If there were more than 30 people, they would use 2 boats. DAY 1 – TRIP DEPARTURE AND SAIL TO KENAWA ISLAND We were lucky that the boat trip from Lombok to Labuan Bajo got off to a very smooth start. The waves weren’t that big so we could enjoy the scenery around Sumbawa island while had lunch together. Around 4 PM, the boat arrived at Kenawa island. This is the first island that we visited during the boat trip from Lombok to Labuan Bajo. Kenawa island is a small uninhabited island located just 58,2 km from Lombok island at the northwestern side of Sumbawa island. Located at Alas strait, it’s part of Poto Tano district, West Sumbawa regency, West Nusa Tenggara. Kenawa island has a unique topography where most of its surface is covered by a green meadow. A hill stands at the tip of the island. We visited Kenawa island during the dry season so we didn’t get to see how green the meadow was. Instead, we get to see the sea of brown grass. Kyle said he prefers to see the green meadow but for me brown meadow also nice and unique. I had never seen scenery like that in Indonesia. Due to its unique topography, Kenawa island is a popular destination for Indonesian tourists. People came to take pictures and to camp. We hiked to the peak of the hill to enjoy the spectacular view of Alas strait and Sumbawa island in the distance. On the way back, we found a few houses with odd shapes stands on one side of the island. Its shape was round and decorated with many glass bottles. I was very intrigued by the house since it looked like alien houses! When we took a look inside the house, a couple of white people welcomed us and told us that they are the scientist who participating in a program called Earthship, which means they living in a kind of home made of natural and recycled materials to save the environment. It was a strange yet exciting experience to see such houses in an uninhabited island near Sumbawa. Before came back on the boat, some people bought beer from the only warung on the island. DAY 2 MOYO ISLAND WATERFALL TREK & SNORKELING The 2nd day of boat trip from Lombok to Labuan Bajo was started with breakfast at 8 AM. I woke up feeling a bit dizzy since the waves got higher and shook the boat many times. I had to take a motion sickness medicine to be able to sleep well. Right after the breakfast was finished, the boat crews told us to get on the small boat. The boat then took us to a small island called Moyo island. I’ve been curious with this island for a long time! Back to my work trip to Sumbawa & Satonda island in 2010, the guide told me that Princess Diana and her lover came to the beautiful island for vacation. The island should be amazing if she decided to visit it among other destinations in the world, I thought at that time. Another reason why I was very excited to visit Moyo island is that I heard there was a very pretty waterfall in the middle of the island. But unfortunately, we didn’t visit this waterfall. Instead, we visited a small waterfall that looked exactly like a normal waterfall. It wasn’t huge and nothing special compared to other waterfalls in Southeast Asia. Even Kedung pedut in Kulonprogo, Yogyakarta is way nicer! The boat crew told me we can’t go to the pretty waterfall since we would have to pass the resort area and it’s not free. How disappointing… But even though I didn’t get to visit the pretty waterfall, I quite enjoyed a mini-trek through Moyo island. It was a short 20 minute walk through the jungle to a tucked-away waterfall. The rest of the day was spent snorkeling & swimming. Since the boat didn’t stop anywhere that day, it became a great opportunity for us to have a little group bonding with our fellow travelers. DAY 3 GILI LABA DARAT ISLAND – MANTA POINT – PINK BEACH – KOMODO VILLAGE This was by far my favorite day of the trip. We woke up before sunrise to visit Gili Laba Darat island. This island was my favorite island during the trip from Lombok to Labuan Bajo. Gili Laba Darat, also known as Gili Lawa is one of several breathtaking viewpoints in Komodo National Park, Flores. Most people come to see the sunrise, so did we. I was amazed once we got off the boat the first thing I saw on the island were some deer roaming around. Wow, I had never seen deers or other animals in the wilderness of Indonesia! The atmosphere of Gili Laba Darat also felt like Africa since the grass has turned brown. The island consists of several hills. We all hiked to one hill for around 40 minutes. By the time I reached the peak, the sun was rising high in the east, creating a magical moment for all of us. The scenery was wonderful, very scenic & breathtaking! The deep blue ocean stretched as far as I could see, surrounded by the cool brown hills. The landscape of the islands rising out of the sea was also incredible. The hike was not bad at all and was worth every drop of sweat for the pictures. After the spectacular Laba View Point, we headed back down to our boat and set sail for Manta Point. I didn’t snorkel since I was feeling tired but Kyle did. He said it was an awesome experience seeing many manta rays! In the afternoon, the boat was approaching Komodo island. But we won’t be visiting the komodo dragons until the last day. The boat then took us to the infamous pink beach that’s also located at Komodo island. I was a bit skeptical about the numerous publicities of pink beach. I thought it wouldn’t be as gorgeous as seen on the internet. But I was wrong! The pink beach was nice, cool, and lovely! We had a great time enjoying the beach & swimming there. In case you are wondering why the sand looks pink, the beaches are said to get their color from microscopic animals called foraminifer. These tiny little creatures have pink shells and live in coral reefs surrounding the beach. Consequently, pink sand is a mix of shells, coral, and calcium carbonate. The last place we visited during 3rd day of the boat trip from Lombok to Labuan Bajo was Komodo village. Komodo is a village located in the subdistrict of Komodo, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara province. The village encompasses the territory of Komodo Island and the small surrounding islands. I can’t say the visit to Komodo village was enjoyable. It was a good opportunity for us to see the real-life of local people. We wandered around the stilt houses that were built to not get flooded by high tide and bought snacks and drinks at some warungs. Some travelers even played football with the local kids. But I didn’t like what I saw in the village. The beach looked very dirty, I also saw a pile of trash around the corners of the village. More than that, I read a story where kids had to stop their education since they have to go to Flores to continue their studies but the families don’t have enough money to pay the school fee. I also heard the only opportunity for them is to work as a ranger in Komodo national park. As an Indonesian, I support the central & local governments’ preservation of the Komodo Dragon. But providing a better life and easy access to education is essential and mandatory for Komodo villagers. Education is the key to creating a better life for all of them and they deserve to get it since they are also Indonesian! DAY 4 KOMODO ISLAND – KELOR ISLAND – LABUAN BAJO, FLORES The fourth and final day of the trip. It’s time to visit Komodo National park and see these beasts in person. We got off the boat and made the short walk to the entrance of the national park. In contrast with Komodo village, Komodo national park looked nice, clean, and well-maintained. We were told that since it was mating seasons for the komodo dragons, it was pretty rare to see them on the island. But once we arrived at the entrace we were surprised by our ranger who asked us to go to the beach. It turned out there was one komodo dragon there lying on the sand. Everyone on our group seemed amazed seeing Komodo dragon in person. It was huge and looked dangerous! During the journey around Komodo National Park, we were always guided by one or two rangers. It’s mandatory to follow them since they know well about the beast and the island. A few tourists in the past who thought they were smarter than the rangers ended up get bitten by Komodo Dragons, resulting in painful wounds or death. It was nice hiking around Komodo island. We got to see 3 Komodo dragons in total. After the excitement of seeing three different Komodo dragons when the expectation were rather low, we got back on our boat and made our way to the last stop Kelor island. It was also a nice small island. Kyle snorkeled and happy with the variety of fishes he saw, but I preferred to enjoy the scenery around the island. There was also a small hill on the island but we were too lazy to hike under the heat. After the group returned from Kelor island, we set sail for our final destination — Labuan Bajo. We also enjoyed Labuan Bajo even though the town was dusty. But I liked the scenery and variety of restaurants there. When I get another chance, I am sure going to visit Labuan Bajo again, maybe by flying from Bali to Labuan Bajo. FOOD & DRINK If you join the boat trip from Lombok to Labuan Bajo as I did, you’ll get three meals each day, and there’s pretty much always enough for seconds. Most of the meals are served with some soy-based dishes like tofu or tempeh, a vegetable dish, plain rice and noodles occasionally, meat, and a fruit platter. They have tons of cases of bottled drinking water. There’s also unlimited coffee and tea. Also — before you get on board you have the option of buying beer and soda from a vendor who will run to the store and grab them for you. You also can buy beer at some warungs like in Kenawa island or Komodo island. I recalled there were also some boats that came just to sell beers & snacks to us. IS THE BOAT TRIP WORTH IT ? Joined the boat trip from Lombok to Labuan Bajo was absolutely worth it. It was a once in a life experience to live aboard a boat for 4D3N in one of the most scenic parts of Indonesia. It wasn’t very comfortable though since the boat was shaken by the waves many times and I didn’t get the chance to have a proper shower for a few days. It was definitely different from cruising in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam where we were staying in a nice cruise. But it was still a very unique and memorable experience for us. If you are considering taking the boat trip from Lombok to Labuan Bajo, I’ll tell you, just take it. You’re comfort levels are tested at times, but it is absolutely worth it. You’re guaranteed to see some incredible sights, meet awesome people, and have the trip of a lifetime. If you visit Indonesia, definitely consider visiting the Komodo National Park! This national park consists of three larger and a number of smaller islands and covers a total of 1,817 km². White beaches, pink beaches, azure blue sea full of colorful sea life and great viewpoints. To discover these beautiful islands, I took a great four day boat trip from Labuan Bajo in Flores with Lombok as final destination. Before getting on the boat, I did an awesome road trip on the island of Flores to never forget. A very big recommendation! This road trip is very good to combine with the boat trip, because the boat trip starts or ends in Labuan Bajo in the west of Flores. You can find a complete Indonesia itinerary of 2 months here. Got excited about this travel video? Then read on! Day 1 Komodo National Park The day started early. When my alarm went off at about 600 am, the light was already shining through the window of my dorm. At 715 am I was at the organization’s office in Labuan Bajo with all my stuff. Because I was traveling at the end of the high season in September 30+ people were divided over three boats. Together with 9 others I was placed on the smallest boat. Quite a bit of luck, because the size of the groups can reach 25 – 40 people. Because we were a small group, everyone had enough space on the deck. Rinca island We passed countless small islands that emerged one by one from the azure blue sea. The first island we set foot on was Rinca Island. Rinca Island is one of the two islands in the Komodo National Park where the famous Komodo dragons live. And it wasn’t long before we spotted the first dragons. How big those animals are! After walking on the island for 10 minutes, we even witnessed the pairing ritual of two those Komodo dragons. We made a short hike on the island until we reached a viewpoint. Fortunately, the hike was short, because it was very hot. Fortunately we were able to recover afterwards on the boat with a big lunch. Pink Beach We took a break from this delicious lunch on Pink Beach. And as the name suggests, this beach is a bit pink. This is due to super small pieces of red coral that have mixed with the white sand. In combination with the azure blue sea, this is a feast for the eyes. But not only the beach is beautiful, also the underwater world is beautiful. While snorkeling I swam among the most colorful fish armed with my action camera. At one point, even a sea turtle came to say hello. Komodo island On Komodo island we would spot the Komodo dragons for the second time. During the short hike we saw some, but not as many as on Rinca island. In addition to the Komodo dragons, there are also various bird and snake species. One of the guides saw a cobra getting away, but unfortunately we were too late to see it. After our visit to Komodo Island we sailed towards Padar Island where the boat was anchored for the night. The first night at sea took some time getting used to the sea. I usually get car and seasick quite quickly and even if the boat is anchored, there is still a lot of movement. Fortunately, there was plenty of fresh air on the deck, which allowed me to sleep reasonably well on my thin mat. Day 2 Komodo National Park Padar island Day two started a bit earlier than day one, because today we climbed to the highest point of Padar island before sunrise. However, we were not alone, but shared the island with hundreds of other tourists. It was about half an hour uphill and after a fairly restless night this was a bit harder than expected. Although I had seen the view from Padar island countless times in photos, it felt very special to experience it in person. From the highest point you have a beautiful view of the three large beaches of Padar island. Did you know that all three beaches have a different color? Unfortunately the island was quite dry and brown because I was there at the end of the dry season. Nevertheless, it was completely worth watching the sunrise here. Long Beach If you think Pink Beach is the pinkest beach in Komodo National Park, then you are wrong. Long Beach is even more pink! Long Beach is part of Padar island. Here too it was beautifully snorkeling and blissful swimming in the crystal clear water. After our visit to Long Beach we set sail for Moyo island which is part of Sumbawa, about 14 to 17 hours of sailing. I relaxed on the deck and enjoyed the passing landscape. After a while sailing we passed Sangeang island where an active volcano is located. Every now and then this giant spits out a big plume of smoke. Very cool to see! At one point we also saw dozens of dolphins swimming in the distance that were getting closer. Until they swam right in front of our boat and played with the waves. Very cool to see! After dinner it was at least 8 hours sailing. That promised to be a tough night. As a precaution I took a motion sickness pill with a beneficial side effect that it made me drowsy. We decided to turn the mats on the deck so that we were the length of the boat and we were, as it were, rocked to sleep by the waves. That worked a lot better than sleeping the other side around, so that your head continuously moves up and down on the swell. Day 3 Sumbawa It was also waking up early this morning, but unplanned. Around 5 o’clock there was “MANTA, WHITE MANTA, WAKE UP!” called from below deck. Most of us didn’t let them say that twice and in no time we were down with our sleepy heads. And it was not just any manta ray, but a white giant manta ray! And no, it was not one, but two. Everyone watched in amazement as these two meter-sized giants “flew” through the water. How magical that was. Do you know that feeling of joy, enthusiasm and additional adrenaline when you see something special? Since Manta Point was closed to large boats a few weeks before our trip, we thought the chance of spotting mantas was very small. That’s why we were even more enthusiastic now. To see and hear the surprise of the crew, this was also the first time they saw a white giant manta ray. And because these animals were unknown to them, they first thought they were dangerous. After some quick online research, these white giant manta rays turned out to be just as harmless as a regular giant manta ray. So we decided to go into the water with our snorkels. Very carefully we lowered ourselves in the water so as not to scare the mantas. However, there is always someone who is not very tactical and who splashes into the water pontifically … As soon as I was in the water, I felt tingling on my skin everywhere, but really everywhere. When I looked under the water, I saw countless little pink things in the water. Oh no, jellyfish! As we all floated silently in the water and tried to ignore the constant painful stinging, the mantas swam straight at us and made a turn at the last minute. Fantastic! After lying in the water for about 10 minutes, I couldn’t take the stinging anymore. They became more painful at the time and it didn’t make me happy when those jellyfish hit my lip, ouch! Moyo island During breakfast on the boat, everyone still spoke enthusiastically about this great experience. One thing was certain, our day couldn’t go wrong anymore. Not much later it was time to visit Moyo Island and climb the waterfall on this island. Thanks to certain minerals in the water, a rough layer remains on the stones, making the waterfall fairly easy to climb. At the top of the waterfall we were able to swim and with the help of a rope to jump into the water. Gili Bedil From Moyo island it was a few hours sailing to Bedil island; a tiny island near the coast of Sumbawa. Only one family lives in this paradise spot. It was an afternoon to relax on the white beach between the palm trees. In the evening we sailed to the uninhabited Kanawa island. Here we ended our last evening with a beach party. Day 4 Sumbawa & Lombok Kanawa island On the last day we got up early as usual after a short night. This time to watch the sunrise on Kanawa island. It wasn’t the crew that woke us up, but we happily dragged the crew out of their cozy beds. The hike on Kanawa island was fortunately not so difficult and we all enjoyed our last sunrise together. After a few hours at most we docked in Lombok. We got in several vans and were driven to the office in Mataram. From there we were taken to our self-chosen final destination. That is how I arrived in Gili Air at the end of the afternoon. Flores ➤ Lombok of Lombok ➤ Flores? I made this four day boat trip in the Komodo National Park with Wanua Adventures. They only offer trips from Flores to Lombok and from Lombok to Flores. Would you like to make a one- or multi-day boat trip starting and ending in Flores, then you have more than enough choice in Labuan Bajo. It doesn’t really matter in which direction your boat trip goes. You see the same things on both routes. In general, the boat trip from Flores to Lombok is a bit more relaxed. This is because you largely sail along with the waves on this route. In addition, you don’t sail very long on the first days, which makes it easier to get used to the swell. After having lived on a boat for so many hours and days, I noticed that I got land sick’ when I was on one of the islands. The first night on Gili Air, I was still swaying in bed. Deck or Cabin Class? Before taking the boat trip, I could choose to sleep in Deck or the slightly more expensive Cabin Class. With Deck Class, you naturally sleep on the deck with other tourists. However, a number of Cabins were also on board; super small rooms with a double bed. These Cabins are located below deck near the engine and it can get very hot. If you don’t mind sleeping in a room with others, I would definitely recommend Deck Class. Do not expect luxury on board. We all slept on a thin mat with a small cushion and a blanket. Perhaps it was better not to know when these were last washed. However, on board there are the necessary things such as a toilet and water tank and a shower with a little luck. What to bring Since this boat trip in Komodo National Park starts at Flores and ends at Lombok, you just take all your luggage on the boat. In any case, make sure you have swimming clothes and enough sunscreen. An action camera can also be fun if you like to capture the beautiful underwater world of Komodo National Park. In addition, my doctor advised to take preventive malaria pills. Because I already had to do this during my tour of Flores, I just took them during the connecting boat trip. Do you sometimes get car or seasick? Then don’t forget to bring travel sickness pills. It certainly doesn’t hurt to stock up on a large amount of snacks, because you can not get them on board. Soft drinks and beer are also recommended to buy in advance. In principle, breakfast, lunch and dinner are sufficient, but after swimming I often felt like eating a snack.

I've booked this company because two different people recommend me while I was traveling in actually 3D/3N trip n I will detail it, be prepared, it's a long reviewTHE BOATThe boat was not Wanua, it was another one, but really good! Big, clean, lots of space for moving, for taking sun at the deck. There's no shower, but the toilet facilities were always clean n with toilet paper. Your big suitcase/backpacker stay down in the boat, so I recommend to take all u need in a small backpacker then u don't need to go down all the sleep in a mattress in the upper deck, or in cabins. I was in the deck, it was really nice. They provide a small pillow and a blanket. But sometimes can get really cold at night, at least for me. I was glad I had my sleeping bag to warm use curtains to close the sides and back/front of the deck. It helps with the wind and FOODeveryday different food at lunch and dinner. Basically it's rice, vegetables, fruit, a non vegetarian dish at lunch and eggs/omelette for vegetarians or tofu/Tempe and food was really nice! And there were enough food for all. Just one night they had to fried more eggs. And one night they made also breakfast it's just one banana also had cookies in the afternoon!!! OI had lots of snacks, because I heard that I would need it. But I didn't needed that much. But it's good to have something, specially if u eat too TRIPI think the better way of doing this trip is from Flores to Lombok, because the most of the stops is around Flores. And then u don't get to first day we stopes at Rinca and Komodo islands to see the dragons. It was amazing, but at rinca I felt a little big to rushing. We also stopped at pink beach for snorkeling. The snorkeling equipment was good, but they don't provide paddles. And sometimes it would be to have need to swim to the beach and back to the boat, can be tiring. They have a small speed boat but looked they were a little lazy for using it, and a little grumpy night we slept in the bay, close to Padan island. Very quiet see. Almost stand day we were at Padan island for the sunrise! Amazing! Then snorkeling with manta rays n another beautiful island in the come the worst part. The second night is all in movement. I think I'm total around 16 sail for the whole night till get in Moyo island next sea can get rough. Specially in the open between the islands. But in my boat no one got sick. Not even me! And I'm always sick. Even with was taking the Antimo for sickness and it helped a lot. But also it was not that third day starts at Moyo island, were u go to the waterfall and stay happy for the sweet water! Then after 4 hours of sailing u stop in another island for snorkeling. And then after more 4/5 hours u arrive in Lombok harbor around 9/10 pm. I felt a little sick in this party, the boat was really shaking, but I think I was the only one, people were having beers and last night u sleep in the harbour. Very calm 4 day is already in Lombok, were they arrange shuttles to the places u want to go. My shuttle to Kuta was not included in the price, so maybe is good to have sure and ask about that before at the be sure about the entrance fees u have to the office they told me one and in the boat they asked for more money, saying it was Sunday and the entrance fees r more expensive. That's true, but I think it was not that expensive. Better to check the price of the fees at the office n double check with then if it's was strange. N I got really mad about in general it was a really good boat, good food, plenty of water, beautiful sunsets, islands, highly think the company still need some more organization, the office in Labuan Bajo is a mess an the staff is always playing around. Not professional. And give u wrong I heard more problems from other company's so I'm happy with my choice.

The Komodo boat tour was the most amazing experience that I had during my two months backpacking trip through South East Asia. I booked the 4 days and 3 nights Komodo boat tour with Wanua Adventure. This tour departs from Lombok island and we went all the way to Labuan Bajo in Flores. Spending the days exploring islands, snorkeling and sunbathing on deck until the sun sets on the horizon was an unforgettable experience. At night you can watch the clear, starry sky until falling asleep to the slight swaying of the you have enough time, I definitely recommend including this boat trip or a similar one on your trip to Bali. Things to know before you go Here are a few things you should consider before booking a Komodo boat tour. Which agency to book the Komodo boat tour with? As I said above, I booked my Komodo boat tour with Wanua Adventure and I highly recommend them. Be aware that this is a back to basics boat tour no phone reception, a very basic shower and sleeping on a mattress on deck or in a private room if you pay a little extra. What I want to say is Don’t expect luxury and comfort – it’s an adventure! The crew of Wanua Adventure really did everything in their power to make this an amazing experience for every passenger. They kept the boat clean at all times, the food was amazing and they always made sure that everyone was okay and enjoying the Wanua Adventure, there are other agencies which offer similar trips to Komodo National Park. If you’re willing to pay more, you can even book a private tour and have a more luxurious experience. Single day vs. multi-day boat tours You can fully adapt the Komodo boat tour to your schedule and find a tour that fits your time frame. There’s even the option of doing a single day boat tour. However, for that you need to travel to Labuan Bajo first as those tours don’t depart from I recommend a multi-day boat tour to Komodo National Park. It’s an unforgettable adventure and the sunsets and the night sky from the boat are simply breathtaking. Plus, you obviously get to explore more amazing places on a multi-day your time is limited and you can only do a one-day Komodo boat tour, then definitely make sure to include Padar Island in your tour. This is the place with the most amazing view of Komodo National Park. Where does the Komodo boat tour start and end? The 4-day boat trip that I did departs in Lombok and ends in Labuan Bajo on Flores. There’s also the option to do the Komodo boat trip the other way around, starting from Labuan Bajo and arriving on other agencies offer their tours from Labuan Bajo and also bring you back there. How much does a Komodo boat tour cost? The 4 days and 3 nights trip with Wanua Adventure in deck class costs about 150€. If you prefer to have some more privacy and comfort you can book a private room for 200€.This includes an entrance fee to Komodo National Park, a government fee and a snorkelling fee. What's included in a Komodo boat tour? The Komodo boat tour is an all inclusive tour with 3 freshly prepared meals per day, unlimited coffee, tea and water. If you want to bring additional drinks you have the chance to buy them in advance and cool them on board. Also, I recommend bringing some snacks in case you have cravings in-between grear mask and snorkel is also provided, as well as basic fishing are some charging points on board for your electric devices, but don’t rely on them. Sometimes they don’t work and there are also not enough for everyone to charge their devices. What to bring on a Komodo boat tour The Komodo boat tour is an all-inclusive adventure but there are some essentials that you should definitely pack for the trip. Power bankI love this one because it has enough power to charge your device several times, which will be very useful on this multi-day boart trip-Swim wearTowelThese microfiber travel towels are ideal because they’re lightweight, they dry fast and they don’t take much screen & hatSunglassesSnacksExtra drinks beer, cider, soft drinksSweater for fresh nightsCameraI use the Sony Alpha A6000, which is a compact and lightweight camera, ideal for photography beginners. Day 1 Lombok and Kenawa Island Before the Komodo boat tour I had been staying in the beach town Kuta in Lombok. I was picked up from my hostel early in the morning and after a long drive we arrived in Bangsal. This was the meeting point of all passengers and the guides. Everyone checked in, was served traditional Indonesian breakfast and was assigned to their boat. Then we hopped onto another van and drove for 3 more hours to the harbor of Kayangan in East of excitement for the adventure ahead of me, I boarded the boat together with the other passengers and we headed out to the had booked deck class which meant sleeping on a mattress next to the other passengers on deck. This was the most affordable option and I was stoked about the feeling of the light ocean breeze at night. Those who had booked a private room had a bit more comfort and privacy as they could close the door to their the space on deck was quite limited and the mattresses were close to each other, I was happy about my decision to sleep on deck. It was really comfortable and there was fresh air all the everyone was settled, lunch was served. We ate together and started getting to know the other passengers. After lunch we made our first stop at Kenawa island. On the small uninhabited island there’s nothing but a snack vendor and small restaurant on the beach. A narrow path leads across the island up to the top of a hill. The sun was already low and shining a beautiful golden light on the grass-covered ground. We hiked up the little hill and watched the stunning view of the sunset from there. When the sun had almost set we headed back to the boat and made our way to Bola island where we anchored and stayed the night. I was excited for the first night on board, wondering if I would sleep well. It took me a while to fall asleep but I loved the adventurous feeling of being out on the ocean. After a while I finally fell asleep to the soft swaying of the boat. At 2 am the howling of the starting engine woke me up. We had to get going to arrive to our next stop on time. Day 2 Moyo Island On the second day we had an early start as we woke up with the rising sun. Before breakfast we could already jump from the boat and have a morning swim. The fresh air paired with the tranquility of a remote bay and the morning sun kissing our skin was so calming. This is what pure happiness and joy feels like. After breakfast and my first essential cup of coffee we explored Moyo Island and hiked to a picturesque waterfall. We spent about an hour there climbing the waterfall, jumping into the cool water, and taking photos. The remaining day was to our own disposal for sunbathing on the beach, snorkelling or simply chilling on the boat. Time passed rapidly and suddenly the sun had started to set. The sunsets from the boat are amazing. Sitting on the deck, becoming friends with the other travelers and watching the sun go down out on the open sea is magical. What I hadn’t expected at that point was that the most magical moment of the day was yet to come. Once it got dark I headed up to the deck again and I was absolutely overwhelmed by the view. The deep black sky was full of we were in the middle of nowhere out on the ocean, there was no light pollution at all. I lied down on my back and looked up while feeling the movement of the boat. In moments like this, I realize how small I also realized that I’m on the other side of the world, out on the sea for 4 days with people I didn’t know before, all by myself. These are the kind of moments where I start thinking about life and being grateful for everything. Day 3 Komodo Island and Pink Beach On the third day it was time to visit the famous Komodo dragons on Komodo Island. The dragons only live in and around Komodo National Park and they can kill a human with only one bite when they attack. Komodo Island I was excited to see those deathly animals in their natural habitat. We got a guided tour by a ranger who would answer all our questions about the Komodo dragons. To be honest, I had expected Komodo Island to be more impressive as I had heard a lot about it before. We didn’t see many Komodo dragons because they usually like to hide. The walk through the island wasn’t exceptional either. But anyways, it was nice to spot at least a few Komodo dragons and to learn more about them. Pink Beach The second stop on day 3 of the Komodo boat tour was Pink Beach. It has this name because the sand has a pinkish tone. At first I didn’t see it at all – when I hear “Pink Beach” I imagine something different than this. But, when looking closely and from the right angle you can see some red shiny particles in the of broken coral reef are washed ashore and make the sand shimmer in pink. What surprised me was that on the photos on Google the beach looks completely pink. I’m not quite sure if these photos are edited or if the color depends on factors like the weather or the season as anyways – pink or not pink – the beach is amazing. We went snorkelling in the warm turquoise waters and saw lots of marine life. Unfortunately, the coral reefs are devastated because too many visitors are careless and step on them. There’s a small hill on one end of the beach – and of course I wanted to hike it. When there’s a hill with a beautiful view almost nothing keeps me from climbing it. And it was absolutely worth it. It took less than 10 minutes to get to the top and the view was stunning. There’s another beach on the other side, surrounded by greenish hills that look like they’re from a fantasy world. After a couple of hours at Pink Beach we had to go back on board as we still had a far way ahead of us that day. We spent the afternoon sunbathing on the deck, reading and socializing while the boat was bringing us closer to our we reached the place where we’d spend the night we threw a little boat party as it was our last evening on board. The sunset was stunning again, just like the days before. We enjoyed each other’s company, played games and had fun until everyone got too tired from that day’s adventures and went to bed. Day 4 Padar island, Rinca island and Labuan Bajo The last day was my personal highlight of the Komodo boat tour. Watching the sunrise on Padar Island beat everything we had experienced so far. Padar island The alarm rang us out of bed at 5 am and the crew dropped us off at Padar Island right after. It was still pitch black and we didn’t see much of the island with travelers from other boats who had the same schedule we hiked up a hill from where we’d watch the sunrise. To secure us a good spot on the top we were almost running up and overtaking others. The top of the hill on Padar island was quite crowded, but luckily we found a perfect spot to sit down and enjoy the view. As the sun was about to rise, the darkness disappeared and it revealed the spectacular view of our surroundings. Everything looked so surreal. The formation of the island is absolutely unique and the pink-ish light of the sunrise made it look even more impressive. When there was enough light we took turns in taking photos of each other. Don’t be fooled by how empty it looks on the photos – we actually had to queue for 5-10 minutes to get a photo at this spot! When we were done taking photos we made our way down again. Back on the boat, freshly prepared pancakes for breakfast awaited us. Everyone was still in awe from the experience on Padar island and we couldn’t believe how beautiful and unique this place was. Rinca island Then we continued the journey to Rinca island. There we could see some Komodo dragons again and we got a guided tour across the island. Personally, I enjoyed Rinca island more than Komodo island as the scenery was prettier. Rinca island was the last official stop of the Komodo boat tour. At that point we had the option of either heading straight to the harbor of Labuan Bajo or stopping one last time for snorkeling and swimming. Everyone agreed on staying a little longer on the boat and adding another stop to jump into the crystal clear waters again. After a couple of hours we made our way to Labuan Bajo, the final destination of the Komodo boat tour. Labuan Bajo When we arrived to Labuan Bajo we said our goodbyes to the crew and to the other passengers. I was so much looking forward to a shower and a proper bed like never first thing I did was to go for a delicious Italian pizza. I had been eating only traditional Indonesian food for the past days so it was amazing to have a European meal for a Bajo is a lovely little village that is not very developed yet. Tourism has been growing in recent years because of the boat tours to Komodo National Park, but it’s still just a tiny fraction compared to a place like wrote a detailed guide on Labuan Bajo on where to stay, where to eat and things to do. Komodo boat tour with Wanua Adventure - Yes or no? If you’re into adventure and you’re okay with renouncing luxury and comfort for a few days, then the Komodo boat tour with Wanua Adventure is definitely the right choice for you. I was traveling solo but I was lucky to meet these amazing people on board. We met as strangers and said goodbye as friends. Getting to know the other passengers and experiencing this adventure together makes it even more memorable. Coffee is the fuel that keeps me running. I put a lot of time and effort into creating blog posts to make travel planning easier for you. If you benefited from my blog, I would appreciate a cup of coffee! 🙂 This was the most amazing experience during my 2 months trip through South East Asia and I definitely recommend it to every you want to explore Komodo National Park without renouncing privacy and comfort, you can also book a private tour with a different operator. But be aware that this is considerably more matter which option and agency you choose, doing a boat tour to Komodo National Park should definitely be on your list for a trip to Indonesia!
Thetrip can take 1 1/2 days. Bus Lombok and then get on the ferry from Sape, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. It will take approximately 1 1/2 days all the way from Lombok. There are many kinds of boats that operate from Labuan Bajo. You can join a high-speedboat or Phinisi boat. It depends on your budget and travel style.
